美国疾病预防与控制中心（Center for Disease Control and Prevention, CDC）是美国联邦政府机构，隶属于美国卫生和人类服务部，是美国疾病预防控制体系的主干。该中心创建于1946年7月1日，总部位于亚特兰大，是美国联邦政府机构用来保护国内外美国公民的健康和安全，提供可靠的信心来帮助卫生决策，通过强有力的合作来促进国民的健康，通过改善环境卫生与健康教育来提高美国人民的健康水平。

美国CDC的高层组织机构包括主任办公室（The Office of the Director）、全国职业安全和健康研究所（National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health， NIOSH）以及六个协调中心（办公室），分别是环境卫生和伤害预防协调中心（Coordinating Center for Environmental Health and Injury Prevention, CCEHIP）、卫生信息服务协调中心（Coordinating Center for Health Information Service, CCHIS）、健康促进协调中心（Coordinating Center for Health Promotion, CoCHP）、传染病协调中心（Coordinating Center for Infectious Diseases , CCID）、全球健康协调办公室（Coordinating Office for Global Health, COGH）、恐怖主义防备和应急协调办公室（Coordinating Office for Terrorism Preparedness and Emergency Response, COPTER）。此外，CDC还设有全国性的研究中心，包括国家伤害预防与控制中心（National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, NCIPC）、国家环境卫生中心（National Center for Environmental Health, NCEH）、国家出生缺陷和发育性残疾中心（National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities, NCBDDD）、国家慢性病预防和健康促进中心（National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, NCCDPHP）、国家免疫和呼吸系统疾病中心（National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, NCIRD）、国家动物源性、病媒性和肠道疾病中心（National Center for Zoonotic, Vector-Borne, and Enteric Diseases, NCZVED）、国家艾滋病、病毒性肝炎、性传播疾病和结核病预防中心（National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention, NCHHSTP）、国家防备、检测和控制传染病中心（National Center for Preparedness, Detection, and Control of Infectious Diseases, NCPDCID）、国家公共卫生信息中心（National Center for Public Health Informatics, NCPHI）、国家健康行销中心（National Center for Health Marketing, NCHM）、国家卫生统计中心（National Center for Health Statistics, NCHS）等11个中心 。

在21世纪，美国CDC的宗旨是“致力于预防工作，实现全球公共卫生安全，促进人群健康（Healthy People in a Healthy World—Through Prevention）”。

美国CDC的使命是“通过预防和控制疾病、伤害和残疾，来促进人群健康和提高人群的生活质量（To promote health and quality of life by preventing and controlling disease, injury, and disability.）”。为完成之一使命，CDC所要承担的主要职责是：（1）健康监测（monitor health），（2）检测和调查与健康相关的问题（detect and investigate health problems），（3）进行科学研究提高预防能力（conduct research to enhance prevention），（4）指定并提倡合理的公共卫生政策（develop and advocate sound public health policies），（5）实施预防策略（implement prevention strategies），（6）促进健康行为（promote healthy behaviors），（7）创造安全和健康的生活环境（foster safe and healthful environments），（8）提供领导和培训（provide leadership and training）。上述八项主要职能是CDC完成其使命的支柱。
